The 'base country' is the country from which the trademark registration application is filed to other countries through the Madrid System. The trademark office of the base country, called the Office of Origin, certifies the international application and sends it to WIPO.
- The base country must be a member of the Madrid System.
- The Trademark must be filed or registered in the base country, in order to be able to request the extension to the other countries.
- The applicant must have nationality, domicile or business incorporation in the base country.
